Creatine HCl vs Monohydrate: What the Evidence Actually Says

The short answer

For nearly everyone, creatine monohydrate is the better choice, and the one randomized trial that tested the two forms head to head found creatine HCl offered no benefit over it.

Creatine HCl does one thing measurably better: it dissolves. Researchers measured it at 38 times more soluble in water than monohydrate. That advantage does not carry into your muscles, because monohydrate is already absorbed almost completely.

Worth saying plainly: Promix makes creatine monohydrate and does not sell an HCl product. You should know where we stand before you read our comparison. Everything below is sourced so you can check it yourself.

The one case for HCl is narrow but real. If monohydrate consistently upsets your stomach after you have already tried the obvious fixes, a smaller and more soluble dose is a reasonable thing to try.

What is creatine HCl?

Creatine HCl is creatine bound to a hydrochloride salt, which makes it dramatically more soluble in water than creatine monohydrate.

Monohydrate is creatine bound to a single water molecule. Same creatine in both cases. Different packaging around it.

The solubility difference is real and it has been measured. Researchers characterizing creatine salts found the hydrochloride form was 38 times more soluble in water than creatine monohydrate (Gufford and colleagues, Journal of Dietary Supplements, 2010). That is not a marketing number. It is a laboratory measurement, and it is the honest basis for everything creatine HCl claims about itself.

Because it dissolves so readily, creatine HCl is sold in much smaller servings, typically 750 mg to 2 grams against monohydrate's 3 to 5 grams. Worth knowing where that smaller serving comes from: it is set by the companies selling the product, not established in published dosing trials.

Which brings up the distinction the rest of this post turns on. Dissolving in a glass and absorbing in your body are two different things.

What is the difference between creatine monohydrate and HCl?

The difference comes down to the salt attached to the creatine molecule, the dose on the label, and the amount of published research behind each one.

Does creatine HCl absorb better than monohydrate?

No. Monohydrate absorption is already close to complete, which leaves very little room for another form to improve on it.

The International Society of Sports Nutrition addressed this directly in its position stand on creatine supplementation. Their finding: the conversion of creatine to creatinine in the gastrointestinal tract is minimal regardless of transit time, and absorption into the blood is nearly 100 percent (Kreider and colleagues, 2017).

Sit with that number for a second, because it settles most of this debate. If almost all the creatine monohydrate you swallow already reaches your bloodstream, a form that absorbs better has almost nothing left to gain.

The same position stand is blunt about competing forms. Claims that other forms of creatine are degraded less in the body, or reach muscle in greater amounts, are described as currently unfounded. The forms they had tested and found no better than monohydrate for creatine retention: creatine citrate, creatine serum, creatine ethyl ester, buffered creatine, and creatine nitrate.

So how do we square that with 38 times the solubility? Both are true. Solubility describes what happens in your glass, and creatine HCl genuinely wins there. It just was never the bottleneck. Monohydrate's absorption was not being held back by how well it dissolved, so improving solubility 38-fold does not put more creatine into your muscles. It puts less grit in the bottom of your shaker.

Is creatine HCl better than monohydrate for strength and muscle?

One randomized controlled trial has compared them directly, and it found creatine HCl offered no benefit over creatine monohydrate.

Eghbali, Arazi and Suzuki published the comparison in Physiological Research in 2024. Forty participants trained with resistance exercise for eight weeks, split into four groups: creatine HCl, creatine monohydrate with a loading phase, creatine monohydrate without a loading phase, and placebo.

Both creatine forms clearly beat placebo. Strength went up, muscle cross-sectional area in the arms and thighs went up, skeletal muscle mass went up, and body fat percentage came down. Neither creatine form beat the other. In the authors' own wording, creatine HCl showed no benefit over creatine monohydrate.

The limits of this study

This is one study of 40 people, ten per group, ages 18 to 25, over eight weeks. It is the most direct evidence available on the question, and it is still a single small trial. Anyone telling you the matter is settled in either direction is going past what the research actually supports. We would rather hand you the study and its limits than a conclusion you cannot check.

Does creatine HCl cause less bloating than monohydrate?

Creatine HCl is often sold on the promise of less bloating, and while a smaller serving makes that plausible, no trial has tested the claim directly, and the water-retention worry about monohydrate is mostly a short-term loading effect.

Two different complaints get filed under one word here, so it helps to separate them. There is water retention, meaning the scale moving up in the first week. And there is stomach discomfort, which is what most people actually mean when they say creatine made them bloated.

On the first: reviewing the evidence on creatine and water retention, Antonio and colleagues concluded that creatine supplementation may not lead to water retention over longer periods, and what does occur is largely intracellular, meaning water drawn into the muscle itself rather than a layer sitting over it (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2021). The 1 to 3 kg bump people notice is tied to the heavy loading protocol, and it is not permanent.

On the second: if a big dose of powder sits badly with you, there are cheaper things to try before switching forms. Skip the loading phase. Take it with food. Use a micronized powder, which is ground to a finer particle size and blends more easily. How much should you take?

Monohydrate has an evidence-backed dose of 3 to 5 grams per day, while creatine HCl labels typically call for 750 mg to 2 grams, a serving size set by manufacturers rather than established in published trials.

The ISSN position stand puts the monohydrate numbers plainly. Muscle stores can be maintained on 3 to 5 grams daily. If you want to saturate them faster, roughly 0.3 grams per kilogram of body weight daily for 5 to 7 days does it, followed by 3 to 5 grams thereafter. Larger athletes may need up to 5 to 10 grams daily to hold their stores.

Do you need a loading phase?

No. Loading saturates your muscle stores faster, but taking 3 to 5 grams daily gets you to the same place in three to four weeks.

This is not a guess, and it is worth pointing at the evidence because the loading question generates more confusion than almost anything else in creatine. The 2024 head-to-head trial happened to run monohydrate with loading and monohydrate without loading as separate groups. Both produced significant gains in strength and muscle mass over placebo. Loading was the faster route, not the only one.

The ISSN position stand says the same thing in its dosing guidance: smaller daily amounts of 3 to 5 grams raise muscle creatine over a 3 to 4 week period, though the performance effects in those first weeks are less well supported than with loading.

So the tradeoff is speed against comfort. Loading means about 20 grams a day for a week, split into servings, and it is the protocol most associated with the early water-weight bump. Daily dosing is slower and unremarkable. Both arrive.

Is creatine HCl worth the extra cost?

For most people, no. You are paying more per gram for a form that did not outperform monohydrate in the one trial that tested them against each other.

There is a real exception, and it deserves to be stated without hedging. If monohydrate consistently bothers your stomach after you have already tried a micronized powder, taken it with food, and skipped the loading phase, then a smaller and more soluble dose is a sensible thing to try. Some people tolerate less powder better, and a supplement you actually take beats a better-studied one you quit.

What is not a good reason: it mixes clearer. Dissolving was never the limiting factor, so paying a premium for solubility buys you a nicer-looking glass and nothing measurable in your muscles.

What to look for in a creatine, whichever form you pick

Whatever form you choose, the label matters more than the letters after the word creatine.

  1. Third-party tested. Someone other than the manufacturer should have verified what is in the tub. Promix creatine is third-party tested for safety.
