Why Pre Workout Makes Your Skin Itch (Beta-Alanine, Explained)

That prickling across your face and forearms is beta-alanine, and it is doing something ordinary. What causes it, how long it lasts, and how to make it milder.

Promix Pre-Workout Pink Lemonade pouch, an all natural pre workout containing 5 grams of beta-alanine per serving Beta-Alanine
The amino acid behind the tingle. 5 g per serving in our Pink Lemonade.
The ingredient behind it

The short answer

The itch comes from beta-alanine, an amino acid in most pre workout formulas. It switches on a touch-nerve receptor in your skin, your brain reads the signal as itching and tingling, and researchers call the result paresthesia. It usually starts within about 15 to 20 minutes and fades within a couple of hours.

It is not an allergy. The reaction runs on a different nerve pathway than histamine, which is why it comes with no hives and no swelling, and why an antihistamine does nothing for it. The sports nutrition literature describes it as harmless, and smaller or divided doses make it milder.

And no, a stronger itch does not mean a stronger product. The tingle says the beta-alanine is absorbing, nothing more. How much you take at once is what decides how strongly you feel it, which is why we publish our doses further down.

Worth saying plainly: our own Pre-Workout contains beta-alanine, 5 grams of it in a full serving of Pink Lemonade. We are not going to pretend the itch away, and we are not going to dress it up as proof the product works. Every claim below is sourced so you can check it yourself.

01 What makes you itch in pre workout?

Beta-alanine. It is an amino acid included in most pre workout formulas for endurance, and it is the single ingredient behind the prickling, crawling itch across your face, ears, neck, and forearms.

On an honest label it is listed plainly as beta-alanine, so you can check any tub in your cabinet in a few seconds. Researchers call the sensation paresthesia, and it is one of the most common questions first-time pre workout users ask, usually somewhere between the parking lot and the squat rack.

One near neighbor worth ruling out. Niacin, a B vitamin in some formulas, causes a flush of its own. We say so plainly on our own Detox Flush page: it contains niacin and will cause flushing and tingling, and that is normal. The tell is what you can see. A niacin flush brings visible warmth and redness. The beta-alanine sensation is a prickling itch with nothing to show for it.

Two ingredients, two different sensations
Your scoop

Most pre workout formulas carry several active ingredients. Two of them can produce a skin sensation, and they feel different.

Beta-alanine

A prickling, crawling itch or tingle, usually on the face, ears, neck, and forearms. Starts within about 15 to 20 minutes.

Paresthesia — this post

Niacin, in some formulas

A wave of visible warmth and skin redness. It can tingle too, but the redness is the tell. A separate, well-known response to the B vitamin.

Flush — not the same thing

02 Why does beta-alanine make you itch?

Because it switches on a set of nerves in your skin that were built to sense touch. The receptor has a name, and the study that found it is worth knowing.

In 2012, researchers published a study in the Journal of Neuroscience tracing the sensation to a receptor called MRGPRD, found on a specific group of sensory nerves that end in the skin. Beta-alanine binds to that receptor, the nerves fire, and your brain reads the signal as itching and tingling. Mice bred without that receptor scratched significantly less after the same dose, which is how the researchers confirmed it was the pathway involved (Liu et al., 2012).

Two details from that research matter for you. First, the reaction is histamine-independent. When the researchers injected beta-alanine into human skin, it produced itch with no wheal and no flare, the two signatures of a histamine response. This is not the pathway allergies use, which is why the itch comes with no rash, no hives, and no swelling, and why an antihistamine does nothing for it.

Second, it is dose-dependent. The more beta-alanine you take in one sitting, the stronger the prickle. In the trial that measured it, doses above 800 mg taken as a straight solution commonly produced symptoms (Décombaz et al., 2012). Where you feel it varies from person to person, and some people barely feel it at all.

03 Is the pre workout itch dangerous?

No. The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand on beta-alanine states that supplementation currently appears to be safe in healthy populations at recommended doses, and names paresthesia, the tingling, as the only reported side effect.

That is the whole safety story for the itch itself. It arrives, it peaks, it fades, and it leaves nothing behind. What deserves equal clarity is the reaction that is not this itch, because the difference matters.

Ordinary

The beta-alanine itch

Prickling, tingling, crawling

Shows up on the face, ears, neck, and forearms within about 15 to 20 minutes. No hives, no swelling, no rash. Fades on its own within a couple of hours.

What to do: nothing. Or take less next time.

Not this itch

An allergic reaction

Hives, swelling, trouble breathing

An immune response to something in the formula, running on a completely different pathway. This is not paresthesia and it does not simply fade out.

What to do: stop taking the product and seek medical care.

And the standing rule for any supplement: if you have a medical condition or take medication, check with your doctor before adding one.

04 How long does the pre workout itch last?

It usually starts within about 15 to 20 minutes and fades as blood levels of beta-alanine fall, generally within a couple of hours. No treatment needed, nothing to counteract.

The honest version of this answer is a shape rather than a single number. Researchers who measured the sensation over time found it tracks blood levels of beta-alanine almost exactly: symptoms peaked early, around the same time blood concentrations did, then tapered as the body cleared the amino acid (Décombaz et al., 2012). A separate absorption study found blood levels of beta-alanine were back at baseline about two hours after a dose (Harris et al., 2006).

How the itch shows up and fades

The shape of the response after one full dose. It climbs fast, peaks early, and is gone within a couple of hours.

0 20 min 1h 2h Itch intensity ONSET ~15–20 MIN FADES AS BLOOD LEVELS FALL
The itch — tracks blood beta-alanine

Illustrative shape only, drawn from the pattern the research describes: symptom onset around 15 to 20 minutes (Liu et al., 2012; Décombaz et al., 2012), symptoms tracking plasma concentrations (Décombaz et al., 2012), and plasma back at baseline by about two hours (Harris et al., 2006). The axis values are not measured data and should not be read as such.

Two things follow from that shape. The itch is usually at its worst right around the time you start training, and it is usually gone before you are. And because symptoms track the dose, the size of your scoop is the lever that actually moves it, which is the next section.

05 How much beta-alanine is in Promix Pre-Workout?

Five grams in a full serving of Pink Lemonade, and 3.2 grams in Classic and Stim-Free. We print those numbers, and here is what they mean for the itch.

Most pre workout labels never tell you this. A formula can list beta-alanine in the ingredients and leave you guessing whether you are getting a token pinch or a full research dose, and the amount is the single thing that decides how strongly you will feel the tingle. So here is ours, side by side.

What is in a serving

Our two caffeinated formulas, compared on the label. Note the beta-alanine row.

Promix formula comparison: Pink Lemonade Pre-Workout with 5g L-Citrulline, 5g beta-alanine, 100% Vitamin C, 250% B12, 3g L-Tyrosine, 1g Taurine and 200mg caffeine, beside Mixed Berry Pre-Workout with 0g L-Citrulline, 3.2g beta-alanine and the same vitamins, tyrosine, taurine and caffeine

Promix's own published formula figures, verified August 2026. Pink Lemonade is the Kelly Mathews collaboration, sold as the advanced pre and pump formula; Mixed Berry is the Classic daily training formula.

Five grams is a real dose, and you should expect to feel it. The trial that measured the sensation found symptoms commonly appear above 800 mg taken at once in solution (Décombaz et al., 2012). A full serving of Pink Lemonade is more than six times that. If you take the whole scoop, the tingle is not a surprise, it is arithmetic.

For daily context: the ISSN position stand describes 4 to 6 grams a day as the range that raises muscle carnosine, and notes that loading is usually split into doses of 2 grams or less (Trexler et al., 2015). A full Pink Lemonade serving delivers 5 grams in one go, 20 minutes before training. That sits inside the daily range the research uses. It is simply arriving all at once, which is exactly the condition that produces the strongest tingle.

Classic and Stim-Free carry 3.2 grams, still comfortably above the threshold where most people feel something, but noticeably less than 5. And one detail worth pulling out, because it catches people: caffeine-free is not tingle-free. Our Stim-Free formula has no caffeine and the same 3.2 grams of beta-alanine as Classic. Those two ingredients solve different problems, and dropping one does not drop the other.

06 How do you make the itch milder?

Take less beta-alanine at once. That is the whole trick, and there are five ways to apply it, in order of ease.

  1. Start with a half serving.

Promix's own directions say to start with 1 scoop, half of the full 2-scoop serving. On Pink Lemonade that takes the beta-alanine from 5 g down to 2.5 g in one sitting. The itch scales with the dose, so less at once means less prickle.

  2. Choose a lower-dose formula.

Not every pre workout carries the same amount. Ours run from 3.2 g of beta-alanine in Classic and Stim-Free up to 5 g in Pink Lemonade. If the tingle is the part you dislike, the smaller number is the easier place to start.

  3. Split larger doses.

If you take standalone beta-alanine for endurance, divide it into doses of 1.6 g or less across the day. The ISSN position stand names divided lower doses as a proven way to reduce the tingling.

  4. Consider sustained-release beta-alanine.

In a controlled trial, a slow-release tablet of the same dose produced tingling scores no different from placebo. This applies to standalone sustained-release beta-alanine supplements rather than mixed powders.

  5. Ride it out.

The sensation is harmless and fades on its own as blood levels fall, generally within a couple of hours. Skip the antihistamine; the itch does not run on histamine, so it will not help.

What we are not going to tell you: that you will stop feeling it after a few weeks of regular use. The research we cite here did not test tolerance, so we do not claim it.

07 Does the itch mean your pre workout is working?

No. The tingle tells you beta-alanine is absorbing, nothing more. The real benefit runs on a much slower clock, and it arrives whether or not you feel anything.

With consistent daily use, beta-alanine raises muscle carnosine, a compound that helps buffer the acid buildup you feel during hard efforts. The ISSN position stand puts numbers on it: muscle carnosine rises 20 to 30 percent after two weeks of consistent supplementation, and 40 to 60 percent after four (Trexler et al., 2015). That accumulation, not the acute tingle, is where the endurance effect comes from.

So a stronger itch is not a stronger product, and no itch at all does not mean yours failed. Consistency, not sensation, is what does the work. Since this is the claim a lot of marketing leans on, here is the honest split.

What the evidence supports

  • The itch is a known, harmless side effect. The ISSN position stand names paresthesia as the only reported side effect of beta-alanine at recommended doses in healthy populations.
  • It is dose-dependent. Bigger single doses produce stronger symptoms; doses above 800 mg in solution commonly produce them (Décombaz et al., 2012).
  • Divided doses and sustained-release forms reduce it. Both are named in the ISSN position stand, and the sustained-release trial scored indistinguishable from placebo.
  • The benefit builds over weeks. Muscle carnosine, raised by 4 to 6 g daily for at least 2 to 4 weeks, is the mechanism (Trexler et al., 2015).

What it does not support

  • That a stronger itch means a stronger product. Nothing in the research links itch intensity to effectiveness, and we are not going to imply it does.
  • That the itch lasts exactly 60 to 90 minutes. The studies measured a curve, not a finish line. "A couple of hours" is what the blood data supports.
  • That you build tolerance with regular use. The sources here did not test it, so we do not claim it.
  • That an antihistamine helps. The pathway is histamine-independent, which is precisely why it does not.

08 Which Promix products fit here

Our Pre-Workout comes in three types, Performance, Classic, and Caffeine-free, and all of it is built on the same standard as everything else we make: no artificial anything.

The published claims on the product page are the ones we will repeat here and no others: beta-alanine and taurine aid muscular endurance*, L-citrulline enhances blood flow and reduces soreness*, and tyrosine supports cognitive performance and focus*. All Promix pre-workout powders are third-party tested, and you can look up any batch on our third party testing page or learn how to check any supplement's testing claims yourself.

Which one you want depends on how you feel about the tingle. Pink Lemonade carries 5 g of beta-alanine and is the strongest of the three on that front. Classic and Stim-Free carry 3.2 g. If the prickle is the part you would rather do without, start with Classic, and start at half a scoop. We would rather tell you that than sell you the bigger number and let you find out in the parking lot.

If you are new to it, do exactly what the label says: start with 1 scoop, half a serving, about 20 minutes before training. That start-low direction doubles as the easiest itch management there is.

09 Frequently asked questions

Is pre workout supposed to make you itch?

If it contains beta-alanine, itching or tingling is a common and expected response, especially at full doses. Not everyone feels it, and how strongly you feel it varies from person to person. Researchers call the sensation paresthesia, and the sports nutrition literature describes it as harmless.

How long does the pre workout itch last?

It usually starts within about 15 to 20 minutes of taking pre workout and fades as blood levels of beta-alanine fall, generally within a couple of hours. It resolves on its own without treatment.

How do you stop the pre workout itch?

Take less beta-alanine at once. Start with a half serving of your pre workout, or split standalone beta-alanine into divided doses of 1.6 g or less through the day. Sustained-release beta-alanine also produces far less tingling. Antihistamines do not help because the itch does not run on histamine.

Is the pre workout itch an allergic reaction?

No. Beta-alanine triggers a touch-nerve receptor in the skin called MRGPRD, a pathway separate from the histamine response behind allergies. The itch comes without hives or swelling. If you do get hives, swelling, or trouble breathing after pre workout, that is not the beta-alanine itch. Stop taking it and seek medical care.

Does the itch mean the pre workout is working?

No. The tingle only means beta-alanine is absorbing. The endurance benefit comes from muscle carnosine building up over two to four weeks of consistent use, and it arrives whether or not you feel the itch.

Is beta-alanine safe?

The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand states beta-alanine supplementation currently appears to be safe in healthy populations at recommended doses, with tingling as the only reported side effect. If you have a medical condition or take medication, check with your doctor before adding any supplement.

How much beta-alanine is in a pre workout?

It varies by product, and many labels never print the number. Promix publishes ours: 5 g per serving in Pink Lemonade, and 3.2 g in Classic and Stim-Free. For context, the International Society of Sports Nutrition describes 4 to 6 g a day as the range that raises muscle carnosine. Symptoms scale with how much you take in one sitting rather than with your daily total, which is why one large serving tingles more than the same amount split up.

Can you get a pre workout without beta-alanine?

Yes. Some formulas skip beta-alanine, and without it there is no beta-alanine itch. Check the ingredient panel: an honest label lists beta-alanine plainly, and a good one prints the amount. One thing worth knowing is that caffeine-free does not mean tingle-free. Our own Stim-Free Pre-Workout has no caffeine and still carries 3.2 g of beta-alanine, because those are different ingredients doing different jobs.
