Q & A with Promix Founder & CEO, Albert Matheny
“What does the body need to build lean body mass? For beginners like me, what are some of the ups, downs, and noteworthy effects of strength training?”
Congratulations on deciding to give strength training a try! You won’t be sorry.
What you absolutely must know going in is that to build lean muscle mass, it is imperative that you are fueling with sufficient calories and protein. The fuel you provide your body while strength training will enhance all of its major benefits: increased muscle mass (which comes with an increased metabolic expenditure, i.e. you now burn more calories!) and improved bone density. When done correctly, there is really no downside to strength training and eating to support it.
FOCUS ON FORM & FUEL
However, improper form can cause injury or exacerbate existing conditions. Additionally, too many calories – or the wrong kinds of calories – can stand in the way of your success and keep you from leaning out as you build muscle.
Overall, everyone NEEDS to do strength training simply for their functional health and fitness: the lean body is just a major plus. Even if you do not wish to build lean muscle, strength training or load bearing exercises of some sort will help maintain muscle tone and bone density as you age. It’s important to set yourself up for success, so working with a trainer, at least initially, is critical to learn proper form and technique, understand the importance of warming up and cooling down, and avoid burning out by going at it too hard, too fast (1).
